Despite the heat, our Dutch guests are maintaining warm feelings in their team and are primed for victory.
Jelmer Firet: “It’s really hot in Kazan – that’s all I can really say about my impressions so far. Unfortunately I haven’t managed to see anything yet. It’s my first time at an IOI, but I’m not worried and I’m hoping to win a bronze. Our team is made up of the finest IT minds in the Netherlands – we’re from different towns so have only known each other for two weeks.”
Jens Heuseveldt: “This is my second time at the Olympics. I’m also hoping for a medal as we’ve all worked really hard towards it – we’ve done a lot of training. I think our team’s main strength is that we are all very positive people.”
Eljakim Schrijvers, team leader: “We don’t have a mascot but we do have a logo: a little owl. It means we are clever people. As you can see, it’s a computer owl, one who can also program. We have a good team this year – they do everything together and help each other, which is very important. Think about it: you’re in a different country, you’re young, you don’t know what to do and you’ve been put in a room with people you don’t know. And yet they don’t even bicker among each other! It’s really nice. More than that – they look after one another. And obviously, they have a really great team-leader" (laughs).
